Heating the entire house with a propane heater is out of the question and not a great idea. I'm assuming that a 400 sq ft (20 ft by 20 ft) room is large enough to allow everyone to sleep and work during the day and can be heated by one propane heater. If you have a larger group then you need two heaters and more 20-pound propane tanks.

I recommend the following heater:


This heater has a battery driven fan to blow air around the room and thus heat the room faster. The batteries can be rechargeable from your electrical grid.

This heater uses 2 1-pound propane tanks that can easily be refilled from a 20-pound tank:
